What Are Dermafillers?

Dermafillers are gel-like substances injected into wrinkles and creases to "fill" or "plump" them from underneath. Dr. Mabrie uses Radiesse, Juvéderm, and Restylane for his San Francisco patients, three of the most advanced products available today. All are FDA-approved. They are safe, non-animal based fillers that yield remarkable results for hundreds of thousands of men and women each year. They last a four to six months under the skin, safely and gradually absorbed by the body.

The products are especially effective for naso-labial folds (lines between the nose and mouth), "marionette" lines (from the corners of the mouth downward), and the grooves between the eyes and nose. They can also be used augment cheekbones, plump up lips, and restore a healthy look to faces robbed of fullness by disease.

How do they Work?

As we age, our skin loses volume. Once firm and robust, the skin's foundation gradually breaks down due to a loss of collagen and moisture. It collapses and sinks, leaving us with lines and wrinkles and eventually a gaunt, hollow look. Radiesse, Juvéderm, and Restylane have been formulated to restore a firm foundation and give you back your youthful fullness.

Radiesse is made of tiny "microspheres" of calcium hydroxylapitite in an injectable gel. The active ingredient is very safe, having been used for many years in orthopedics, neurosurgery, dentistry and other medical fields. The microspheres form a firm foundation under wrinkled skin, allowing it to lie flat and smooth. It's a versatile product Dr. Mabrie uses for both filling and contouring. And it's long-lasting as well, providing a fresh new look for 12 to15 months or even longer.

Juvéderm is a gel containing a natural, plant-derived ingredient called hyaluronic acid, a substance also found in the connective tissues of the human body. It binds with water molecules in the skin, creating volume to support and smooth out wrinkles. It has been shown to be particularly effective with naso-labial folds, and it works for people of a variety of ethnic backgrounds.

Restylane is also a hyaluronic acid-based gel used primarily for wrinkles around the nose and mouth. Exciting news about the product was recently reported by a team of researchers at the University of Michigan Medical School. In an independent study, the scientists found that while it supports the skin by providing volume underneath, the hyaluronic acid also prompts collagen-producing cells called "fibroblasts" to make more collagen. With injections over time, patients can anticipate actual skin improvement. The University of Michigan study focused only on this one product, and it's certainly possible (though not proven at this time) that other fillers containing hyaluronic acid have the same beneficial effect.

Dr. Mabrie may use a topical anesthetic or inject a local anesthetic to numb the area when treating with dermafillers, so discomfort is minimal.
