Are you planning treatment so you can look your best for a special event like a class reunion or a wedding? Want to know how much time you need to give yourself to fully recuperate? At Mabrie Facial Institute, we’re here to help.

While you’ll see improvements right away, we’re up front about the fact that our process takes a little extra time. But our patients will tell you, the quality and longevity of our results is well worth a few extra hours up front. With a little planning, you can look and feel amazing for your big day and well beyond.

Treatment Timeline

  1. Procedure (day 1) – Expect some swelling and bruising that can last up to a few weeks or more.
  2. Refinement Treatment (at 1 month) – Refinement can happen once all swelling has subsided and the foundation is set.
  3. Second Refinement (at 2 months) – Occasionally, a second refinement appointment is needed for ideal results.
  4. Special Event (at 3 months) – All signs of swelling are gone and your refreshed/refined face is at its radiant best.
  5. Maintenance (at 6 to 12 months) – We want to keep a good thing going by touching up your results at regular intervals.

What Happens at Your Initial Visit

Your initial visit is the beginning of a beautiful relationship. It is where we lay the groundwork for creating and maintaining your ideal face. You’ll meet with members of our expert team, who will listen to your goals and educate you about your options. Together you will:

  • Go through a comprehensive facial assessment in multiple lighting scenarios (directional lighting, light and shadow, revealing lighting)
  • Take clinical photographs for use in tracking your improvements
  • Identify and clarify your goals
  • Develop and document your personal treatment plan

In some cases, treatment can begin right away. In other cases, we will schedule an appointment for your injections at a time that is convenient for you.

Your Procedure

Makeup: We will ask you to remove makeup and wash your face before your procedure.

Discoloration: Immediately after treatment, you may notice small injection marks or redness, which typically lasts a few hours.

Discomfort: An initial “pinch” is usually felt from the needle, which feels similar to a toothpick on the skin. However, most individuals experience very little discomfort during their procedure since dermal fillers contain a numbing anesthetic that takes effect immediately upon injection. Numbness from the anesthesia may occur around the eyes, nose, and lips for 1 to 3 hours.

What To Expect After Your Procedure

Pain: Most people are quite comfortable after their procedure, and discomfort (if any) is usually very mild. You may take Tylenol® to help with this (avoid aspirin, Motrin, and fish oil for 1 week). A cool compress may be used for additional comfort.

Swelling: Swelling around the injection site may occur immediately or up to 24-hours later. Sleeping with your head elevated can help minimize swelling and reduce facial puffiness.

Bruising: Bruising may include a black eye and can occur immediately after your injection, or up to 4 days later.

Exercise: Patients can participate in light activities but should avoid strenuous exercise during the first 24 hours following treatment. Activities that raise the heart rate may increase your chances of bruising.

I'm a Top 25 Most Loved Injector

realself

Out of 2,000 nominees in the U.S., Dr. Mabrie was voted one of the Top 25 Most Loved Injectors for 2017 by the RealSelf community. Thanks to all our amazing patients for making him the only injector in the Bay Area to receive this honor.

Your Refinement Appointment

After your initial treatment, your 1 to 2-month refinement appointment is very important. If you’re preparing for a special event, it’s best to schedule this appointment for 1 month after your initial treatment. This allows enough time in case we want to see you one more time before the big day.

During your follow-up appointment, we will evaluate your results and often layer on additional filler for a more polished effect. Fillers typically do not migrate from one location to another, however, if there is fullness in a concentrated area, gentle pressure will redistribute the filler more evenly. It is usually best to allow our professionals to perform this technique during your refinement appointment.

Some individuals may require an additional refinement appointment approximately 1 month later. This is especially true for procedures that involve the under eye area. This additional refinement ensures that you enjoy optimal results.
