Considering Cheek Implants?
Strong cheekbones have traditionally been considered a sign of beauty. They add to the definition of the face and help improve facial harmony.
Not everyone is fortunate enough to be born with strong cheekbones, however, and perhaps you're not one of the lucky ones. Or maybe you're finding that your cheeks are losing definition over the years as your skin sags. Perhaps you're thinking about joining the increasing number of people choosing cheek implants to enhance their facial structure, either alone or in conjunction with a facelift or another procedure.
Dr. David Mabrie, a plastic surgeon specializing in facial cosmetic surgery for San Francisco and Bay Area patients, is highly experienced in bringing out the best in his patients' faces. He can give you a very good idea about the difference cheek implants can make for you. Schedule a consultation with Dr. Mabrie today.
Can I See My Results Before Surgery?
Dr. Mabrie understands that choosing to have facial cosmetic surgery is a big step for many people.
What if you could see what the new you will look like before you decide? What if you could view before and after photos of your own San Francisco plastic surgery before your surgery?
Dr. Mabrie's computer imaging system makes this possible for you. In your initial visits with him, he will listen to your goals and concerns. He'll photograph your face from six angles, then, using computer software, show you how you will look with possible surgical changes. Click to find out more about computer imaging.
How Is Cheek Implant Surgery Performed?
The cheek implant (shown in blue) is placed against the patient's cheekbone to increase the definition of the patient's face.
Cheek enhancement surgery is done through incisions in the mouth. The implants, made of medical-grade plastic in a roughly triangular shape, are positioned over the cheekbones and stitched in place. The procedure normally takes an hour or even a little less and can be done under local or general anesthesia.
The procedure is sometimes done with a facelift, but it's also performed alone.
As with most facial cosmetic surgeries, the risks are minimal. Dr.Mabrie will review them with you prior to your procedure so you're fully informed.

What Is the Recovery Like?
Most people experience no bruising after cheek implant surgery, but you can expect to have a swollen face and difficulty chewing for a few days. You may feel some tightness or numbness around your cheeks for a few weeks. Swelling subsides gradually, of course, and your new look develops over a period of months. The difference is subtle, so don't be surprised if some of your friends don't notice a change. No one looks at you as closely as you do!
Cheek Implant Q & A
The following are some of the questions we hear frequently about cheek implants. If you have additional questions, call our patient coordinator, Susan Cole, at 866-360-FACE. She'll be happy to spend time discussing the procedure with you on the phone.
How do I know if I'm a good candidate for cheek implants?
The key to success of a procedure like cheek enhancement is realistic expectations. The surgery will change your look subtly, not radically. If you are generally satisfied with the appearance of your face and you're just looking for some added definition in the cheek area, the procedure may be a good choice for you. And it may be something to consider to add to the effectiveness of a facelift. Dr. Mabrie will work with you in consultation to ensure you and he are in agreement about the suitability of cheek implants for you.
What are the risks associated with cheek implants?
Cheek enhancement is a relatively simple procedure with few risks. Still, there are possibilities to consider such as persistent swelling and infection. And very infrequently an implant will shift from its proper place and need to be adjusted. Dr. Mabrie will discuss these risks with you during your consultation.
Will I need to restrict my activities after cheek enhancement surgery?
Dr. Mabrie will advise you to sleep with your head elevated and avoid strenuous activity for a few days. You will probably want to arrange a few days off work, primarily because your face will look swollen. And you may feel better about eating soft foods until your cheeks heal.
