The chin and jawline are important features of the face that contribute to its overall appearance. A defined chin and jawline can enhance the lower face, giving it character and definition. Filler and BOTOX® are treatments that can help shape the jawline, creating either a more masculine and strong chin or a refined and elegant one. At Mabrie Facial Institute in San Francisco, we offer jawline filler and BOTOX to help individuals achieve their desired look and feel confident in their appearance.

Enhancing a Weak or Undefined Jaw: Your Treatment Options at MFI

Complete Jawline & Chin Filler Package

The interconnectedness of the chin and the jaw requires a zone approach to treatment for optimal results. Treating a single component, such as the jaw alone, is ineffective for creating ideal contours in this area. That’s why MFI created our Jawline & Chin Contouring package. Using fillers like JUVÉDERM® VOLUX™ XC, Restylane® Lyft, and RADIESSE®, we define and refine your lower face, creating the WOW-worthy results our patients love.

For Men: The goal is to sculpt a chiseled jawline, focusing on angles and straight lines that augment the naturally masculine bone structure.

For Women: The goal is to create a youthful, feminine jawline that gently curves from the temples to the point of the chin.

By creating a well-defined, streamlined jaw, we more clearly separate the face from the neck. This helps frame the face from multiple angles and adds shape and structure. It can also improve jowling, which can make the face look rounder and bottom-heavy.

Many individuals also opt to add BOTOX for Masseter & Jaw to their treatment plan for a more significant transformation. If an enlarged masseter muscle is contributing to lower face fullness that’s detracting from your jawline, we inject BOTOX, Dysport®, or XEOMIN® into the muscle to shrink it.

All this is carefully discussed and planned, then executed over 2 (or more) appointments for optimal results and satisfaction.

Double Chin Treatment With KYBELLA®

Many people store fat beneath the chin (submental fat) regardless of how fit or slender they are. This “double chin” can hide your jawline and blur the transition between your lower face and neck. We use KYBELLA injections to dissolve the fat under your chin and reveal a more defined jawline.

How Much Does Jawline Filler Cost?

Our treatment package for jawline and chin contouring is priced based on the Injector and includes up to 4 syringes of filler. This package is recommended for chin projection, jowling, and jawline definition. We also offer limited area treatments priced by the syringe.

The cost of KYBELLA injections to dissolve submental fat also depends on the Injector and how much product is needed. Please see our dedicated pricing page for the most current information.

Once we’ve achieved your ideal jawline, you move into the maintenance phase of treatment. From this point on, you should come in once every 9 to 12 months. During these appointments, we touch up your filler, which typically requires much less filler (typically only 1 to 2 syringes).

Qualified borrowers may be eligible for 0% financing for 6 to 12 months through CareCredit and Alphaeon medical financing.

What Causes a Masculine, Feminine, or Weak Jawline?

Genetics/Bone Structure

No matter what your gender is, you may have been born with an angular jaw and a squarer face shape, which we typically associate with masculinity. If you were born with a softer, more curved jawline, this is typically considered more feminine. A small or recessed chin can contribute to a lack of definition in the jawline for both males and females.

Aging/Loss of Bone & Soft Tissue

Many people lose bone density with age, and this can cause the posterior bony angle of the jaw to decrease in prominence. This flattens the posterior jawline from an “L” shape to an almost straight line, which we associate with aging or being overweight. The angle of the jaw may also move up and forward. Additionally, the mandible (jaw bone) that connects the chin to the posterior jawline, can become distorted due to bone resorption and sagging cheek skin. These can leave the lower face looking undefined.

Submental Fat

Even slender people sometimes collect fat under the chin. The dreaded “double chin” can hide your jawline, soften your lower face, and detract from both the masculine and the feminine face shape.

Overdeveloped Jaw Muscles

Some people have more prominent masseter muscles that can broaden and add definition to the lower face. This can contribute to a square, angular, masculine-looking jawline.

Consultation & Planning

Your First Visit

A successful jawline filler experience starts with a thorough consultation. To begin, we first establish your aesthetic goals and expectations. This is your chance to make sure we’re the best match to help you reach your goals of a perfect jawline. Afterward, we take professional-level photographs of your chin and jawline from all angles. We utilize these photos at every visit to identify your concerns and monitor your progress. Using both the photos and an in-person examination we map out a customized treatment plan tailored to your jawline anatomy and goals.

Please plan to spend up to 3 hours in the office for your first visit, which includes consultation, prep, treatment, pre- and post-treatment photography, aftercare education, and scheduling your next appointment.

Your Jawline Contouring Procedure

Your Injector starts by carefully placing dermal fillers, such as JUVÉDERM® VOLUMA® XC, Restylane® Lyft, and RADIESSE®, along the anterior chin, jawline, and mandible to sculpt and define the angles of the lower face.

When contouring the anterior jawline, our skilled Injectors place filler just beneath the skin (subcutaneous) to build and sculpt a more youthful jawline. For the mandibular angle, we place the filler just under the skin and directly on the bone to increase the prominence of the angle.

For the chin, the filler is placed in different areas to build, layer, sculpt, and contour the lower face. The amount, location, type, and depth of filler are modified according to your desired results. We may use a combination of fillers and place them in locations including just under the skin, under the muscle, or on the underlying bone. Sometimes we use BOTOX® injections on the mentalis muscle in order to relax it and allow for increased projection.

Your Jawline Contouring Takes (at Least) Two Treatments

Jawline fillers are staged over 2 or more appointments for optimal results. At the initial appointment, we restore volume to the larger anatomical areas, creating a foundation for the more subtle refinements we make at your second appointment.

The second appointment is not optional but essential to creating the caliber of results our patients deserve and expect. We are careful not to place too much filler at the first appointment because it can pool and spread, causing undesirable results. By layering an appropriate amount of filler over multiple visits, we create natural definition along the jawline and a clear separation of the face from the neck.

At this appointment, scheduled 1 to 3 months after your initial treatment, we carefully evaluate the new contours of your jawline. Since all swelling has subsided, we can see clearly where we need to layer on more filler for optimal contours.

Preparing for Your Procedure

For the best experience, follow these tips in advance of your appointment:

  • A few days before your appointment, restrict blood thinners, such as anti-inflammatories, fish oil, and alcohol. Limiting these will reduce your risk of bruising from chin and jawline injections.
  • DO NOT discontinue prescribed, medically necessary medications.
  • Find and bring any inspiration photos of chins and jawlines you like. This will help your Injector better envision what your treatment goals are.
  • Eat and drink a normal breakfast or lunch prior to your appointment; low blood sugar can make patients lightheaded during treatment.

Recovery & Aftercare

Immediately after your chin filler or BOTOX treatment, you may experience swelling, bruising, and tenderness. These are normal side effects and are most apparent 24 to 48 hours after treatment. They can last up to 2 weeks but typically subside within 2 to 5 days.  Most patients return to their routine activities the same day.

Swelling

  • This area may swell more than others, but it peaks within a few days of treatment
  • This may cause temporary asymmetry, lumps, or bumps
  • Will gradually resolve to reveal your final results over 4 to 6 weeks

Bruising

  • Bruising is normal for this area, but this should dissipate within a week.

Redness & Discomfort

  • Often minimal and lasting just a few days
  • Your chin and jawline may be tender to the touch

Downtime

  • No downtime required
  • May return to work immediately after treatment
  • May resume normal exercise the next day

Because we know you have questions about your recovery process, we created an entire page dedicated to BOTOX and dermal filler aftercare.

Jawline Filler FAQs

Does jawline filler hurt?

A lot of patients are concerned about the pain of jawline filler treatment, but we have numerous techniques to help alleviate discomfort. We use a combination of topical lidocaine, injectable lidocaine, and nerve blocks to numb the chin and jawline. For those who may be a little extra anxious, we also offer nitrous oxide (aka, laughing gas) to help calm some of your nerves. As a bonus, all our fillers have lidocaine in them, so the treatment area continues to become more numb as the jawline filler treatment continues. For the most part, jawline fillers are not very painful and are well tolerated.

What is the best filler for jawline contouring?

The best fillers for jawline contouring are firmer fillers – those with enough support to give projection while having lower elasticity so they do not lose their shape. We are going for that defined, contoured look, after all! You’ll likely find us using Restylane Lyft, JUVÉDERM VOLUMA, RADIESSE, or a filler especially approved for improvement of jawline definition, i.e., JUVÉDERM VOLUX™ XC, in your treatment.

How long can I expect swelling, lumps, and bumps from jawline filler?

Swelling is the most common of the possible side effects of dermal fillers, and the jawline swells worse than most other areas. Swelling typically peaks 24 to 48 hours after treatment and can last 4 to 6 weeks. We’ll give you tips on how to minimize swelling at your appointment.
