Mentalis (Chin) BOTOX
Sometimes chin projection is restricted by a hyperactive mentalis muscle pulling the chin back. If this is causing your chin to appear recessed, we can inject it with BOTOX or another neuromodulator. This disables the muscle, releasing the chin for more projection. This can also smooth the appearance of a dimpled chin. If an overactive mentalis muscle is not treated with a neuromodulator, the chin will remain under projected regardless of the addition of dermal filler. BOTOX for the receding chin is best left in the hands of an experienced Injector, because if the neuromodulator is placed too wide, your smile may be affected.

How Much Does Chin Filler or BOTOX Cost?
Our treatment package for chin projection and jawline contouring includes up to 4 syringes of filler. This package is recommended for chin projection, jowling, and jawline definition. We also offer limited area treatment for qualifying patients.
At MFI, mentalis BOTOX for chin projection includes up to 20 units. Please visit our dedicated pricing page to see the most current cost information.
Once you’re happy with your chin, you move into the maintenance phase of treatment. From this point on, we only need to see you once every 9 to 12 months. During these appointments, we touch up your filler, typically only using 1 to 2 syringes. BOTOX and neuromodulators should be refreshed approximately every 3 months.

Understanding why you have a small, weak, or recessed chin will help you understand why filler is such an excellent solution for chin augmentation.
Genetics/Bone Structure
A small or weak chin—where the mandible (lower jaw) is visibly recessed—is the result of genetics. An underdeveloped jaw bone is an inherited trait that you can probably see in your parents, grandparents, or siblings.
Aging/Loss of Bone and Soft Tissue
Everyone loses bone and soft tissue with age. This can cause the chin to recede and appear too small to balance your other features. Loss of fat and bone causes the chin to become smaller in size, and bone resorption causes the chin to regress and lose projection.
Overactive Muscles
The mentalis (Latin for chin) muscle is responsible for elevating the skin on your chin and acts like a “chin strap.” When the muscle is too strong or tight, it can decrease chin projection. Because the mentalis muscle attaches to the skin, it can also cause an “orange peel” or dimpled appearance of the chin skin. Both of these concerns are addressed with chin BOTOX.

Consultation and Planning for Your Chin Enhancement
Your First Visit
Your chin transformation begins with a thorough consultation with one of our Injectors at our bright, stylish San Francisco office. We first have an in-depth conversation to discuss your aesthetic goals and expectations. We then take professional-level photographs of your lower face from all angles. We utilize these photos at every visit to identify your concerns and monitor your progress. Using both the photos and the in-person examination, we map out a customized treatment plan tailored to your face and your goals.
Your personalized treatment plan may include any or all of the following:
Building appropriate chin volume and shape with fillers.
Applying filler to define and balance the jawline.
Using neuromodulators to relax a hyperactive mentalis muscle, increasing chin projection and reducing the orange peel appearance.
Please plan to spend up to 3 hours in the office for your first visit, which includes consultation, prep, treatment, pre- and post-treatment photography, aftercare education, and scheduling your next appointment.
Your Chin Enhancement Procedure
Chin filler is placed in the different areas to build, layer, sculpt, and contour the lower face. The amount, location, type, and depth of filler are modified according to your desired results. We may use a combination of fillers and place them in locations including just under the skin, under the muscle, or on the underlying bone. We are careful not to place too much filler at the first appointment because it can pool and spread, causing undesirable results. Sometimes we use BOTOX for the receding chin to relax the mentalis muscle and allow for increased projection.
Your Chin May Look Better After Two Treatments
The follow-up appointment is essential to creating the caliber of results our patients deserve and expect. By layering an appropriate amount of filler over multiple visits, we create a natural shape and definition for the chin. At this appointment, scheduled 1 to 3 months after your initial treatment, we carefully evaluate the new contours of your chin. Since all swelling has subsided, we can see clearly where we need to layer on more filler for optimal contours.
For the best experience, follow these tips in advance of your appointment:
A few days before your appointment, restrict blood thinners, such as anti-inflammatories, fish oil, and alcohol. Limiting these will reduce your risk of bruising from chin and jawline injections.
DO NOT discontinue prescribed, medically necessary medications.
Eat and drink a normal breakfast or lunch prior to your appointment; low blood sugar can make patients lightheaded during treatment.
Recovery & Aftercare
Immediately after your chin filler or BOTOX treatment, you may experience swelling, bruising, and tenderness. These are normal side effects and are most apparent 24 to 48 hours after treatment. They can last up to 2 weeks but typically subside within 2 to 5 days. Most patients return to their routine activities the same day.

Will gradually resolve to reveal your final results over 4 to 6 weeks
Bruising

What is the best filler for the chin?
For contouring the chin and jawline, we use fillers from the Restylane and JUVÉDERM families and RADIESSE. Depending on your specific needs and goals, we may use a combination of different fillers. Each formulation has its own unique characteristics, and our expert Injectors choose the appropriate product based on factors such as depth of injection and treatment area. Chin implant vs. filler: which is better?
At MFI, we believe that filler is a better option than an artificial chin implant. While the chin implant is permanent, it requires surgery, downtime, and is not adjustable. If the size, shape, or projection isn’t right, you’ll need another surgery to correct it. On the other hand, filler is entirely customizable, meaning we can precisely sculpt the projection and contours you want—without surgery. Results are long-lasting and, with touch-ups every 9 to 12 months, should last indefinitely.
What if I don’t like my chin filler results?
The flexibility of fillers also includes the option of reducing or eliminating them if you choose to. When we use hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers such as JUVÉDERM and Restylane, these can be dissolved with an injection of hyaluronidase. While the vast majority of our patients are ecstatic with their chin filler results, we are sometimes tasked with “fixing” fillers obtained elsewhere, which often includes hyaluronidase injections.
