What Is BOTOX Cosmetic?

With a few tiny injections, BOTOX Cosmetic blocks the release of acetylcholine, the chemical that causes muscles to contract.

The substance is a natural, purified protein that has been used for many years to treat a variety of conditions including facial tics and eye disorders. BOTOX Cosmetic acts as a block between the nerves that cause facial muscles to contract and produce forehead lines, crow's feet, and furrows between the eyebrows. With targeted muscles relaxed, facial skin looks smooth and youthful again.
The treatment is the only one of its kind that's FDA-approved for use on facial wrinkles.
How Does the Treatment Work?
Example of a San Francisco/Bay Area woman with pronounced forehead wrinkles. After BOTOX Cosmetic is placed the muscles relax and the skin becomes smoother, creating a more natural and relaxed appearance.

As we grow older, many of the lines and wrinkles on our face are caused by natural aging processes and environmental damage. Collagen, the protein that's key to smooth, youthful skin, breaks down with the passing years and exposure to Bay Area sun and wind. Wrinkles commonly known as "crepe paper" wrinkles begin to appear on the lower portions of the face.
But there's another class of facial wrinkles with as much or more potential to make us look old, tired, and even perpetually worried or angry. These are called "dynamic wrinkles," and we all have them on our foreheads and around our eyes. They are the creases that enable us to express ourselves—smiling when we're happy, creasing our eyebrows in concentration, or wrinkling our forehead in surprise. There's no way around it, over time these creases become deeply engraved. Laugh lines, worry lines; however you describe them, they're still prominent wrinkles that can make you look older than you feel.
To reduce or even eliminate your dynamic wrinkles, Dr. Mabrie will treat the area using small injections. Most patients describe the sensation as equivalent to a small sting. You can go back to your normal activities immediately and see your refreshed, relaxed face appear over the next few days.
The treatment is simple, taking just a few minutes in Dr. Mabrie's office, and the results normally last three or four months. Potential side effects are few, including headache and minor bruising.
