Beauty Comes In All Shapes
Everywhere you turn—YouTube, Instagram, your local makeup counter—it seems you’ll find tutorials and products made for contouring. The popularity of contouring makeup and contouring how-to’s reflects people’s interest in trying to create the illusion of a face with balanced angles, proportions, and features. But what if you could enhance the contours of your face without makeup and without surgery, with long-lasting results? I can create this ideal appearance using injectable fillers and neuromodulators like BOTOX® and Dysport® at our San Francisco practice.
A makeup artist uses light and dark shading to create the illusion of a face with ideal proportions. I go beyond illusion by using fillers and neuromodulators to actually slim, sculpt, and contour the face.
BOTOX & Dysport for Slimming
If you feel that your lower face is wide, square, or lacks definition, neuromodulators can help you achieve a more “V-line” or contoured look by relaxing the masseters. The masseter is a muscle that runs through the rear part of the cheek from the temporal bone to the lower jaw on each side and closes the jaw in chewing. Some individuals have overdeveloped, prominent masseter muscles which cause the lower face to appear wide or square. Without impairing your ability to chew, I (or my PAs, Kimberly or Tiffany) can perform non surgical jaw reduction with BOTOX or Dysport injections, producing a slimming effect for the lower face. This helps individuals achieve the “V-line” or “V-shaped” face which many people associate with youth and attractiveness.
Additionally, slimming the lower face enhances the contours of the cheeks and chin and I can refine these further with fillers.
Fillers for Contouring
Using fillers, I can sculpt and define 3 key facial points: the cheekbones, chin, and nasal bridge and tip. Additionally, I correct any age-related volume loss and enhance the youthfulness of features such as the lips.
By highlighting the cheeks, augmenting or softening the chin, and streamlining the nose, we can create the balance, symmetry, and proportionality that are the common traits of attractive faces.
The patient below underwent our signature cheek and chin contouring approach to achieve a more mature and sophisticated look.
Our chin and jawline contouring technique can also create a more refined appearance by defining the lower face.
A Custom Plan for Every Face
When I use injectables to bring out the best version of a patient’s face, I begin by assessing the shape of the face. The idea is not to change the shape of the face, because that’s part of your natural beauty. Instead, I tailor the treatment plan to bring out the best in your face shape as part of my Illumination 360° approach to achieving the most attractive version of you.
What’s Your Face Shape?
The shape of your face determines which contouring treatments will accentuate your features, as well as how your face will age over time. Most beauty experts believe facial shape can be divided into 4 general categories:
Round-shaped faces are roughly equal in length and width, which can create the appearance of a “baby face.” Celebrities like Mila Kunis, Emma Stone, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Jeremy Renner have this face shape.
Contouring the Round Face: At MFI, we use fillers to illuminate the center of the face while augmenting the cheekbones for enhanced midface contours. Refining the nose and chin can also help create a more elongated facial appearance.
Rejuvenating the Round Face: As the round face ages, it may become more square or pear-shaped as volume shifts to the jaw and neck. Fat loss and descent can also produce under-eye hollows. Our team restores the cheek and under-eye areas by adding structure to the midface with fillers.
A heart-shaped face is wide at the forehead and narrow at the chin. Celebrities with heart-shaped faces include Reese Witherspoon, Taraji Henson, and Ryan Gosling.
Contouring the Heart-Shaped Face: People with this face shape can typically benefit from treatments that help bring more prominence to the lower face and balance out the width of the forehead. We may perform subtle lip and jawline enhancement or use fillers to soften a very pointed or prominent chin.
Rejuvenating the Heart-Shaped Face: As it ages, the heart-shaped face can be prone to noticeable forehead wrinkles or drooping brows, which we can correct with BOTOX or Dysport. As fullness in the cheeks and midface diminish, filler injections can restore shape and give a subtle lift, as well as smooth out nasolabial folds, under-eye circles, and marionette lines.
If your face is square, you’ll see that the temples, cheekbones, and jawline form a relatively straight line, and each point is an equal distance from the center of the face. Celebrities with square faces include Angelina Jolie, Lucy Liu, and Zac Efron.
Contouring the Square Face: This is considered an attractive face shape for men, but women with this face shape often want to soften the jawline and add prominence to their cheekbones with fillers. For certain individuals who want to reduce the prominence of the jaw, BOTOX® can be injected into the masseter muscle, which produces a slimming effect.
Rejuvenating the Square Face: Aging can cause the square face to become more rectangular or even pear-shaped as the tissues descend. Dr. Mabrie can add volume and lift to the cheeks and midface—which improves and de-emphasizes jowls—with products like JUVÉDERM VOLUMA XC®. Refining the chin with fillers can also help reduce signs of aging in the square face.
Many consider this to be the “ideal” face shape because of its symmetry and balanced proportions. Oval-shaped faces are generally one-and-a-half times longer than they are wide, and celebrity examples of this face shape include Julia Roberts, Salma Hayek, Kanye West, and Ben Affleck.
Contouring the Oval Face: At MFI, we often focus on emphasizing the center of the oval face for optimal balance. We may add dimension to the cheeks, improve the contour of the nose, or correct under-eye circles.
Rejuvenating the Oval Face: With age, the oval face can become square or even triangular as the skin and fat from the midface descend and accumulate in the lower face. For these individuals, We often focus on restoring volume to the temples, cheeks, and midface with fillers. We may also add definition to the chin and jawline.
Male Athletic Shape
I actually include a 5th facial shape for treating patients. I call this the Male Athletic Shape. This really blends the square and heart shapes, creating a hyper-masculine appearance such as Superman or David Beckham. Angular cheekbones, a defined jawline, and strong chin are the hallmarks of this face shape. Age-related volume loss can create a hollowed-out appearance that strategically placed fillers can correct.
Contouring the Male Athletic Face: Many male contouring patients are seeking to achieve or enhance the male athletic face shape. Our team uses fillers to bring out the cheekbones, create a strong chin, and add definition to the jawline.
Rejuvenating the Male Athletic Face: With age, the clean lines of this face shape can soften and sag, with lax tissue collecting around the jaw and neck. Cheeks lose volume and develop either a flattened or a gaunt, hollowed look. Our Injectors use injectables to subtly lift and define the cheeks and restore the angularity of the jawline. Fillers in the midface at the junction of the cheek and under-eye area can reduce the appearance of shadows and bags and restore prominence to the cheekbones.
