Smoothing Nasolabial Folds

A lifetime of laughing and smiling etches grooves spanning from the sides of the nose to the corners of the mouth. They’re called smile lines or nasolabial folds, and can add years to your appearance. They become even more pronounced as the cheeks lose volume and begin sagging. Dr. Mabrie uses advanced injection techniques and today’s innovative dermal fillers for nasolabial folds treatment at his San Francisco practice to restore youthfulness to the midface.

Seeing is Believing

Correcting nasolabial folds—the "parentheses" lines that run from the outer nostrils to the corners of the mouth—is one of the most common reason women seek dermal fillers like Restylane and JUVÉDERM. These lines can create the appearance of a permanent scowl that prematurely ages you. Dr. Mabrie offers the latest in fillers and injection techniques to erase these lines for a more youthful look.

Men often benefit from the perception that a few lines and wrinkles create a "distinguished" or "ruggedly handsome" appearance. But the "smile lines" that can begin creasing the lower face as early as your 20s and 30s can age men in a way that is not considered attractive. Dr. Mabrie uses dermal filler injections to restore the smoother skin that looks healthy and youthful.

Nasolabial Folds and the Aging Face

As we age, volume diminishes in the face. The cheeks begin to lose their youthful fullness, which causes them to flatten and sag. The drooping skin causes marionette lines, nasolabial folds, and laugh lines to appear, which can make you look like you’re frowning even when you’re not. Dr. Mabrie uses dermal filler injections to restore fullness and plump tissues beneath the skin.

Your Treatment

The primary cause for heavy nasolabial folds is sagging of the cheeks due to volume loss. Often it is important to address the primary problem: cheek volume loss. By augmenting the cheek bones and supporting and lifting the cheek skin, the nasolabial folds are naturally reduced.

Many patients who seek to correct nasolabial folds are surprised to learn that by using fillers under the eyes or in the cheeks, Dr. Mabrie can create a more significant improvement in the overall attractiveness of the face.

There are several choices of fillers applicable to the nasolabial folds, including Restylane®, Restylane® Lyft, JUVÉDERM®, JUVÉDERM VOLUMA® XC, and RADIESSE®. Dr. Mabrie will discuss the particular benefits and risks of each of the different fillers during the initial consultation.

Choose a Skilled Injector

As dermal fillers become more advanced, they are playing a more important role in treatment of the aging face. With more areas of application (tear-trough areas under the eyes, and volume replacement in the cheeks) the required skill level of the practitioner has also increased. Dr. Mabrie performs all anti-aging treatments (such as BOTOX Cosmetic, Restylane, RADIESSE, JUVÉDERM) himself ensuring consistent results and expert care.

Common Questions

Is treatment painful?

Dr. Mabrie keeps discomfort to a minimum with several measures. First, he applies a local anesthetic to partially numb the pinch of the injection. Additionally, all of the fillers Dr. Mabrie uses come pre-mixed with lidocaine for enhanced comfort. Finally, for a gentler injection procedure, Dr. Mabrie uses the innovative microcannula injection method. These blunt-ended microcannulas cut fewer arteries and veins than needles, resulting in significantly less after-treatment bruising and swelling.

What Can I Expect After Treatment?

You may experience some common injection-related reactions such as swelling, bruising, pain, itching, discoloration, and tenderness at the injection site. For additional information, read what to expect during and after your treatment.

How Many Treatments Do I Need?

During your consult, Dr. Mabrie will decide with you the number of treatments and the amount of Restylane, JUVÉDERM, and/or RADIESSE you will need to achieve your desired results. Typically, 1 to 2 syringes are used to treat the nasolabial folds, laugh lines, and marionette lines. He may also recommend BOTOX® Cosmetic or filler injections in other areas of the face for a comprehensive result.

Without touch-up injections, the additional volume will begin to diminish after about 6 to 12 months (JUVÉDERM VOLUMA and Restylane Lyft may last longer). Periodic touch-up injections will help you maintain and refine your results indefinitely.

How much does it cost?
