If you’re wondering how to get rid of dark circles, under eye bags, shadowing, or hollow tear troughs, you’re not alone. Tens of thousands of people every month search the internet for solutions, most of which are ineffective.

If you want to get rid of dark circles and bags for good, it’s important to understand what causes bags and dark circles, which “treatments” you can skip, and how fillers—when applied by highly skilled Injectors—can be used to provide lasting, hassle-free results.

Fillers for Dark Circles & Under Eye Bags: Before-and-After

“Solutions” or Snake Oil?

If you’ve been searching for a “cure” for your persistent dark circles and bags, you’ve probably heard about (and may have tried):

  • Getting more sleep
  • Expensive eye creams
  • Makeup
  • Cucumbers
  • Tea bags
  • Stick-on patches
  • Fancy gadgets
  • Vitamin supplements

Wouldn’t it be great if these things worked? At best, they provide temporary improvement. At worst, they can be costly, messy, and disappointing. The reason they can’t remove dark circles and eye bags is that they don’t address the underlying causes.

What Causes Dark Circles and Under Eye Bags?

Sleep deprivation, dehydration, allergies, and other temporary conditions can contribute to occasional dark circles and puffy eyes. But we’re talking about persistent dark circles and bags—the ones that make you look tired even when you’re healthy and rested.

Baby, You Were Born This Way

Some people are genetically predisposed to hollows or bags under their eyes, and may have them at a very young age. With hollows, the sunken area absorbs rather than reflects light. Raised, puffy bags atop the cheekbone also cast shadows that appear as dark rings beneath the eyes.

Volume Loss

Fat and bone create the structure in the middle of your face—between your nose and your cheekbone—that supports the under-eye area. As these break down over time, the lack of support causes the area beneath the eyes to sink and droop. The result is hollowing of the tear trough area and sometimes “bags” of displaced fat, both of which cast shadows.

Poor Application of Filler

Many of our dark circle patients come to us after having previous tear trough or eye bag filler elsewhere. When a provider injects filler under the eyes without adding the necessary support in the midface, the filler can puddle or pool beneath the eyes, worsening the problem you were hoping to fix. Unskilled or inadequately trained injectors can also inject filler too superficially, producing a bluish tint in the skin.

Other Causes

It’s important to understand that some people have dark circles that aren’t caused by shadows or contour irregularities. Hyperpigmentation is a condition where the skin produces too much melanin, and it can cause darkness around the eyes. Some dark circles are caused by shallow blood vessels that are visible through the very thin skin beneath the eyes. In cases where the dark circles aren’t caused by volume loss or shadows, fillers may not be the ideal treatment. Your Injector will help you determine whether your dark circles can be corrected with filler.

Under Eye Fillers for Persistent Dark Circles and Bags

Fortunately, at MFI, our Injectors have mastered the art of smoothing and brightening this tricky area with filler. Our signature treatment approach for this common issue is our Under Eye Filler/Midface Rejuvenation Package, which produces superior, lasting results when compared to simply injecting dermal fillers under the eyes. Here’s how we do it:

Add Support and Structure

Adding volume to the cheek (midface) using fillers like JUVÉDERM VOLUMA® and RADIESSE® creates support for under-eye fillers. With that structure in place, we can smooth tear troughs using less filler and eliminate the risk of filler migration or pooling.

Smooth Away Shadows

We layer Restylane® to the tear trough area to create an even, shadow-free surface that reflects light. We carefully fill in hollows and smooth bags, creating a seamless transition between the under eye area, the cheekbone, and the midface.

Corrective Injections

At MFI, we specialize in corrective injections to remedy bumps, bulges, and blue tint caused by poor filler application from another provider. We carefully inject a hyaluronidase product to dissolve some or all of the problematic filler, and often follow up with our Under Eye Filler/Midface Rejuvenation package or a Mini Under Eye procedure.
