BOTOX, Fillers, and the Future of Beauty

Fillers over surgery

My wife, Claudia was reading an article in New Beauty magazine the other day that asked physicians for their predictions about the future of their respective fields (plastic surgery, dermatology, aesthetic dentistry, etc.) It got me thinking about facial fillers, my San Francisco practice, and my own predictions for the future in facial cosmetic surgery.

We had a little fun with the topic… Robots? Maybe.

All kidding aside, here are my 4 predictions for the future in aesthetic medicine:

1. Injectables Over Surgery

I know, I trained as a facial plastic surgeon and practiced facial plastic surgery for many years, and that statement is probably considered blasphemy in some circles. However, we see signs of this happening now. Using dermal fillers like JUVÉDERM® and Restylane®, as well as neuromodulators like BOTOX®, to perform a liquid facelift or strategically shape the face from the inside is a more effective way to improve and rejuvenate the face than surgery. In my San Francisco practice, we call this comprehensive approach Illumination 360°.

We’ve already switched:

As more people become aware of the possibilities without surgery, I believe injectables will become the gold standard for rejuvenation and enhancement.

2. Manly Injectables
Future of men and cosmetic surgery

More men will get injectable procedures. Men are experiencing a culture shift where taking care of their appearance is not exclusive to the women in their lives. Case in point: BOTOX treatments for men increased 182% from 2000 to 2020 and dermal fillers for men are up 137%. Looking and feeling good is universal.

It’s amazing and especially rewarding to see men in their 50s visit my practice. These are guys who have never had a facial, so when they see me for a full face dermal filler and BOTOX procedure, I’m thrilled. Men are visual, so when we sit down and look at the tangible results that can be achieved with a treatment plan, they’re all in. I like the light-bulb moment where the patient realizes, “I did look like this… but I can look like this?!” Men are opting for stronger chins with jaw fillers, reducing their under-eye bags, and full facial enhancement.

3. Fillers & BOTOX Like Makeup

Today, many women apply lipstick and eyeliner once or twice a day, their nails are done weekly, and hair color is refreshed every 6 weeks. These beauty routines are all part of the maintenance to look their best. In the near future, we’ll see fillers become a larger part of a beauty regimen where patients will have non-surgical treatments (dermal fillers and BOTOX Cosmetic) every 6 to 12 months to stave off the effects of aging. And that’s a good thing.

Many of the effects created with contouring and highlighting can already be achieved without makeup. No time consuming instructional video or makeup kit required! With dermal fillers, we can go beyond creating the illusion of smooth surfaces, straighter noses, and pleasing angles and actually create more attractive facial shapes. You get to wake up done.

4. More Sophisticated Requests

On the horizon, as more patients better understand dermal fillers and the possibilities with their own appearance, the injector will become more of a “facial stylist” to actualize unique tastes and visions. I think one of the reasons that Kim Kardashian has had such successful transformations is her early success with makeup application. She had a clear vision of what made her face look good and was able to translate that vision with her injector. In the hands of a skilled physician, we’ve seen her transform into a face that millions love.

The future of beauty is bright! Advancements in non surgical treatment have grown exponentially in the past few years. There is no doubt in my mind that the use of non surgical treatments like dermal fillers and BOTOX are here to stay and will become more available to everyone seeking to look like the best version of themselves. You can see some of our patients’ stunning results in our photo gallery of before and after pictures.
